Travel to Devonport
Situated where the Mersey River meets Bass Strait, on the north coast of Tasmania, is Devonport. Devonport is a great place to state a Tasmanian adventure, only an hour and a half drive to either the popular hiking destination Cradle Mountain, picturesque Launceston or Stanley (featuring The Nut).
Devonport is known for its rich history and heritage, with significant artefacts such as the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse – established in 1889, the Don River Railway – built in 1854, and Home Hill, the home of Dame Enid and Joseph Lyons, built in 1916. From 1923-1928 Joseph Lyons was Premier of Tasmania, before being elected Prime Minister in 1932, becoming the only Tasmanian to have been Premier of Tasmania and Prime Minister. Dame Enid became the first female member of the House of Representatives in 1943 and was sworn in as the first woman Federal Minister of the Crown in 1949.
Other activities to do in Devonport include River Cruises, walks through the National Parks and visit the Jazz Festival Beer Tasting & Tour.
