Travel to Dubbo

There’s more to Dubbo than the famous Western Plains Zoo, but that’s a good enough reason to visit the Hub of the West. Established in 1977 with a display of 35 different animals, the Zoo now boasts over 1000 animals from five continents, including the endangered Black Rhinoceros, which is part of a successful breeding program. Visitors can stay overnight at the Zoofari Lodge where they experience the sounds of the African Savannah, behind the scenes tours, a night safari and luxury dining. Zoo Friends conduct early morning walks throughout the year – a truly unique Dubbo experience.

While in Dubbo, take some time to enjoy its other attractions. The Old Dubbo Gaol gives the visitor a dramatic and realistic insight into prison life from the 1870s until its closure in 1966. Hear the stories of the eight men who were hanged here, and read about “Tracker” Riley, famous Aboriginal tracker for the Dubbo Police Force and winner of the King’s Police Medal for distinguished service. Dundullimal Homestead, owned by the National Trust of Australia is a slab house dating from the 1840s, with stone stables, farm animals and a blacksmith shop all combining to evoke an era when our pioneers lived in self-sufficient isolation at the limits of Australian settlement.

But it’s not all about the past. Dubbo is a thriving regional centre servicing a population of 140,000, so there are large shopping centres, galleries, cafes and restaurants, a burgeoning wine industry, excellent sporting facilities and over 40 motels to service travellers.
