Roma, established in 1867, is named after Lady Diamantina Bowen (Contessa Diamantina Georgina Roma), wife of the first Governor of Queensland, George Bowen. Prior to European settlement, the land belonged to the Aboriginal peoples of the Mandandanji Nation.

This rural town in Maranoa located about a five and a half hour drive from Brisbane and only 350 kilometres north-west of Toowoomba, is home to the southern hemisphere's largest sale yards. Roma has a proud history of beef going back well over 150 years. A town rich in sheep and cattle grazing, visitors can experience the outback to watch the Roma Saleyards from a viewing platform where they can witness sales of up to 12,000 head of cattle in a day.

Get a history lesson and feel of the town itself by wandering down the Roma War Memorial and heritage listed ‘Hero’s Avenue’. It features 140 Queensland bottle trees (Brachychiton rupestre) planted along the sidewalk in 1920 to pay tribute to the local soldiers who died in WWI.
